Teak – to Weather or Not to Weather?
Teak has a natural oil in the grain of the wood that protects it from decay and termites. As it ages outside without additional protection applied it will change color into a soft natural silvery-gray. If you want to maintain the original finish and golden honey color all it takes is occasional cleaning and re-oiling. Just like any wood furniture, you can also coat teak with a variety of finishes containing ultraviolet (UV) filters to protect against sun damage. Teak is one of the strongest woods in the world – no other natural wood matches its durability for outdoor use. Teak patio, garden outdoor furniture will last for many generations in your outdoor space or for commercial uses at restaurants and hotels.
Where Does Teak Grow?
You will hear about legal and non-legal teak wood. Most Teak now a day is grown on public lands are on large plantations. The Teak we use comes from Indonesia and is certified by the Indonesian government as a legal wood. Teak has been a crop much as corn and cotton is for hundreds of years. It just takes a lot longer to grow. But with a managed growth system in place as Indonesia has on its government-owned plantations the Teak tree will be around forever. Price and monitored control govern how many Teak trees get cut each cycle. Illegal Teak happens much less often these days, as with any crop grown for money. Plantations guard their crop continually. So when you hear people talking about using Teak for furniture is hurting the environment or is illegal they are wrong.
